Over the weekend American designer, Marc Jacobs, sent local nail technicians into a frenzy with the release of his favorite color of nail polish….clear. Along with showcasing his Fall 2013 collection, Jacobs decided to take it upon his self to declare an end to nail art. A nail technician at fashion week explained to the Wall Street Journal writer, Elizabeth Holmes, that the clear “shade” (is that considered an oxymoron?) called “shiny” is a favorite of Jacobs and the reason behind his pronouncement of death to nail art:

“Because if only one show in New York matters, if only one show has the power to dictate how every other American designer will design their next collections, if only one man has the sheer balls to so forcefully return nails to their natural state — rejecting caviar appliqués, claws, astroturf, printed stickers—it's Marc Jacobs.”

Okay, so of course I have to put my two cents in because I am a fan of nail art. In my opinion it’s artistry and for someone to do such intricate designs on a canvas sometimes less than an inch long is something to marvel at. Nail art is also a form of expression. It says a lot about the person. So to reduce nail art to a simple clear coat just doesn’t do it for me. It’s bleak. It’s dry and it’s boring. Marc Jacobs or not I am not drinking the kool-aid on this one and he can kindly have a seat next to Rihanna and her clothing line River Island.
